A day or so after the birth, she will return and check everyone out again. The birth certificate will be completed. You can request
a Social Security card for the baby when you complete the birth certificate. The baby receives a state mandated newborn metabolic
screening test (commonly called the PKU test) which requires a few drops of blood from the baby's heel.
Another visit is scheduled
two to three days later, to check on the baby's weight and for breastfeeding advice, if needed. Some women see their physician for
their 6 week post-partum check-up, and some come back to see the midwife.
Alternative medicine:
Many of my clients use
forms of alternative medicine as part of their lifestyle. I have experience with herbal medicine, homeopathy, aromatherapy, and
highly recommend chiropractic for pregnant women.
You
have one prenatal visit every month until you are 32 weeks, then visits every 2 weeks until you are 36 weeks. At 36 weeks the midwife
makes a visit to your home to make sure she knows how to get there, and that all of your birth supplies are ready. The birth assistant
will also be introduced to you at this home visit. After 36 weeks, you are seen weekly in the midwife's office until the start of
labor.
When labor starts, you will check in with the midwife by phone, and together you can decide when you need her to come
to the house. The midwife and her assistant will stay with you until the birth of your baby, and afterwards, for 2 to 3 hours to be
sure everyone is well and happy. She will check the baby over thoroughly during this time, and help you get started breastfeeding.
